男性ファッションの歴史に詳しい研究者の
Farid Chenoune氏は、ネクタイに関心を持つデザイナーが
増えている理由を「郊外のヒップホップスタイルと
都市部のハイクラスなスタイルとの間に存在する
衝突の一部分」だという。「ジャケット、シャツ、
ネクタイという“都市のエレガンス”を再主張する
流れがある。郊外と都市部のファッションの間には、
潜在的に政治的要素を含むある種の闘いが存在する。
若者を通したネクタイの復活は、都市部のファッション
と都市の若者のあり方を表すもの」とChenoune氏。
Chenoune氏によると、ネクタイの復活は5、6年前に
若者の間で起きたジャケットとシャツの復活に続くもの。
すり切れたネクタイをゆるく結ぶのが近年の流行のように、
2000年にはシャツのボタンを外したり、シャツをパンツや
セーターから出して着ることが流行だった。
「ネクタイの復活は、ひとつの世代が発信するある
種のメッセージだ」と同氏は付け加えた。
ネクタイは衰退気味だったけど、モードに取り入れられる
ようになり、ネクタイの役割が変化してきているよ、
というお話。最近はポロシャツやシャツに細いネクタイを
合わせる男性が増え、ファッションアイテムとしての
役割が強いですよね。男根の象徴（男らしさ）とか
社会的地位・信用とかそんなことを意識している人は
減ってきているのかもしれません。だったらもう、
スーツにネクタイという慣習は、この日本の夏には辛すぎるので、
勘弁して欲しいな、とも思ったり。それでもネクタイって
女性でいうところの化粧みたいなものなので
（“ノーネクタイ”という“すっぴん”みたいな
言葉まであるし）、役割に多少の変化はあっても、
根本は変わらないだろうし、ネクタイの存在がなくなる
こともないだろうなと。
