コメント欄のパンツの由来のお話が熱いですね。
他にもコメント欄にはいろいろと詳しい情報が載っているので、
一読の価値があると思います。
ここからは憶測でしかないけど、
もっとも人気のあるカジュアルパンツ（ズボン）が、
ジーパンでその次に人気のあるのがチノパンだったので、
次第に「ズボン」より「パンツ」という言葉が普及していったのでは。
ジーンズズボンやチノズボンとは言いませんからね。
一方で女性の下着がパンティからショーツになっていったのは、
やっぱり艶かしい直接的な表現を避けるためでしょう。
今では「ショーツ」がよく使われるのかな？
ショーツは「ショートパンツ(short pants)」の略で、半パンや短パンの意味
なんだけど、「短いもの(shorts)」という意味で男子下着の意味もあります。
これが女性用の下着の意味も担うようになったのでは。
「短いもの（衣服）」だと間接的な表現なので女性ウケが良さそう。
女性の下着の正式名称は「スキャンティーズ(scanties)」、「パンティーズ(panties)」
「ショーツ(shorts)」という感じで、全部「s」で終わります。
そしてスキャンティーとパンティーの複数形は無視されているのに、
ショーツだけは律儀に複数形が遵守されていたりします。
言葉って面白いですよね。
